John Leland – A Tudor Traveller and what he saw

In 1533, England and Wales still retained their medieval splendour, and into this lost world rode the young John Leland – antiquary, scholar and keen observer of life and landscape. His travel notes, in all their sharp immediacy, capture this poignant moment before so much was swept away. To read Leland is to step into the past, and my lecture will point the way.
