Empress Matilda – Her Fight for the Throne
In 1141, England nearly had a reigning queen. The banquet was on the table, but the coronation never took place! Matilda was the woman in question, already Dowager Empress of Germany, and a capable, strong ruler – so why did she fail? My talk explores the politics of gender, medieval theories of monarchy, and the terrible war, which was waged for Matilda’s rights.
